READING NOTES
Look beyond the immediate advantage
Proverbs 20:17–22 weighs dishonest gain, careless speech and revenge against patient and thoughtful conduct.
Consider the end of a tempting shortcut
The opening proverb contrasts the first attraction of dishonest gain with its later bitterness. The warning about a quickly gained inheritance also asks the reader to look beyond immediate possession. These sayings cultivate wisdom; they are not a formula for diagnosing every person’s financial circumstances.
Notice how wisdom involves other people
Consultation, discretion with confidential information and respect within family relationships appear in the same short collection. Wise judgement includes knowing whom to consult and when to stop speaking. Passing on a secret can cause harm even when the information is accurate.
Leave personal revenge aside
Verse 22 challenges the intention to repay evil personally. Waiting on God need not mean concealing abuse or refusing legitimate help. A practical response is to seek a fair process, preserve the truth and resist the urge to humiliate someone in return.
For reflection
Which decision would change if you considered its effect a month from now rather than its immediate satisfaction?
A short prayer
Father, give me patience with decisions, discretion with words and freedom from the desire for revenge. Lead me in honest and just ways. Amen.
