Live under the reign that brings death to an end

First Corinthians 15:21–28 places Christian hope in the risen Christ, whose reign brings every hostile power—including death—to its appointed end.

Begin with Christ's resurrection

First Corinthians 15:1–20 is supporting context. Paul recalls the gospel of Christ's death, burial, resurrection and appearances, then explains that Christian faith would be empty if Christ had not been raised. The assigned passage begins with the opposite declaration: Christ has indeed been raised. Hope for those who belong to Him rests on that act of God, not on optimism about death.

Follow the order Paul describes

Paul contrasts death through Adam with life through Christ, then speaks of an order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who belong to Him at His coming, and then the end. The image of firstfruits means that Christ's resurrection is both already accomplished and the pledge of what is still to come. The passage does not say that death is harmless; it calls death the last enemy to be destroyed.

Serve the kingdom without imitating worldly power

Christ's reign is directed toward the defeat of every hostile rule, authority and power, until all things are ordered under God and God is all in all. Verses 27–28 distinguish the Son from the Father who subjects all things to Him, while presenting the completed purpose of the kingdom. Christians have expressed the relationship described here with careful theological language; this short passage should not be used to diminish Christ. Its practical direction is humble allegiance: resist the fear and domination associated with death, and serve the life-giving reign of Christ through truth, patience and care for others.

For reflection

Where is fear of loss or death shaping your choices, and what would humble allegiance to Christ's life-giving reign look like in that place?

A short prayer

Risen Lord Jesus, keep my hope anchored in Your resurrection. Free me from fear-driven choices and teach me to live humbly and faithfully under Your reign until death is no more. Amen.
