READING NOTES

Pay attention to the heart

Matthew 15:10–20 turns our attention from outward appearance to the motives expressed in our words and actions.

Read the disagreement in context

The passage follows a dispute about washing hands and the tradition of the elders. Jesus has challenged a use of tradition that excuses neglect of parents. Read Matthew 15:1–9 alongside the lesson: the question concerns obedience as well as outward practice.

Listen to the explanation

Peter asks Jesus to explain His words. In verses 17–20, Jesus directs the disciples to the heart as the source of harmful thoughts, speech and conduct. An outward observance cannot make false testimony or cruelty harmless.

Begin with your own response

The passage invites honest examination. Before judging another person’s appearance, consider the effect of your own words. An apology for a false accusation is a concrete response; a general promise to become more religious can leave the harm untouched.

For reflection

Is there a word you need to withdraw, an accusation you need to check, or an apology you have delayed?

A short prayer

Father, help me recognise what my words reveal. Give me honesty to receive correction and courage to repair the harm I have caused. Amen.
