Make room for correction

David’s census in 1 Chronicles 21:1–10 raises questions about authority, listening and accepting responsibility.

Hear the warning before the decision

David orders a count of Israel’s fighting men. Joab questions the instruction and warns about guilt, but the king’s command prevails. The story shows a warning being overruled by authority. It does not teach that collecting information or counting people is always wrong.

Notice David’s admission

Verse 8 records David acknowledging his own sin and asking for it to be taken away. The lesson ends as Gad receives a message for him; the consequences continue beyond verse 10. Read the rest of the chapter to follow the narrative, while keeping the assigned lesson distinct.

Listen before defending your position

A practical question is how we respond when someone challenges a decision we have already made. Responsibility includes making room for unwelcome information. If a decision has caused harm, begin with an accurate account of your part in it rather than an explanation of everyone else’s failure.

For reflection

Whose concern have you dismissed, and what would it take to hear it fairly?

A short prayer

Lord, give me humility to listen and honesty to accept responsibility. Help me change course when correction is needed. Amen.
