Remember with hope; build with care

Job 19 and 1 Corinthians 3 invite reflection on hope, accountability and the foundation on which Christian service rests.

Hear Job in his suffering

Job longs for his words to endure and expresses confidence in a living redeemer or vindicator. His declaration comes within suffering and conflict with his friends. Christians have often read these verses in the light of resurrection hope; the wording and precise interpretation of verses 25–27 require care. Job’s hope should not become permission to explain away another person’s pain.

Keep the foundation clear

In 1 Corinthians 3, Paul addresses divisions attached to human teachers. He describes the church as God’s building and identifies Jesus Christ as its foundation. The testing of building materials draws attention to the quality of each person’s work, rather than the prestige of the builder.

Let remembrance shape present service

Remembering a Christian leader can lead to gratitude and renewed responsibility. These passages do not establish claims about a particular leader’s heavenly status. They invite us to consider how our own service points to Christ and whether the work we contribute will endure.

For reflection

What would it mean to honour a good example through faithful service rather than comparison or personal loyalty?

A short prayer

Father, thank You for those who have helped us follow Christ. Help us build carefully on Him and serve those entrusted to our care. Amen.
