Faithfulness within our limits
Ecclesiastes 3:16–22 faces injustice and mortality without pretending that we can see every outcome.
Face what the writer sees
The writer finds wickedness where justice ought to be practised. Verse 17 affirms God’s judgement, while the following verses reflect on the mortality shared by humans and animals. The passage holds moral accountability alongside the limits of human knowledge.
Let the questions remain questions
Verse 21 asks about the human and animal spirit. Read that question within the writer’s reflection rather than using one sentence to settle every Christian teaching about life after death. The emphasis here is on what a person can observe and what remains beyond their reach.
Attend to the work before you
Enjoying one’s work in verse 22 need not mean ignoring injustice. A practical response is to act fairly in the responsibility you hold, while admitting that you cannot control every result. Gratitude for today’s work and concern for those treated unfairly can stand together.
For reflection
What act of fairness is within your responsibility today, even if the wider outcome remains uncertain?
A short prayer
God of justice, help me act faithfully within my responsibilities and trust You with what I cannot see. Amen.
