READING NOTES
When the crowd is louder than conscience
Mark 15:14–20 shows the cost of yielding to a crowd and the cruelty directed at Jesus before His crucifixion.
Notice Pilate’s decision
Pilate asks what wrong Jesus has done, yet the crowd’s demand grows louder. Verse 15 connects his decision with the desire to satisfy them. Holding authority does not remove the responsibility to judge fairly; popularity can become a reason for abandoning it.
See the mockery for what it is
The soldiers use a robe, thorns and gestures of homage to humiliate Jesus. Mark places their mockery on the road to the cross. Read the rest of the chapter as supporting context: the title they ridicule belongs to the One whose death the Gospel asks us to consider seriously.
Refuse to join in humiliation
A shared joke, an accusation repeated without evidence, or silence when someone is bullied can make cruelty seem acceptable. Following Christ calls for truth and mercy even when the group rewards a different response. Begin with the conversation in which you can make a difference.
For reflection
Where is the wish to fit in making it harder for you to speak or act fairly?
A short prayer
Lord Jesus, help me recognise cruelty and resist the pressure to join it. Give me courage to act with truth and mercy. Amen.
