Lead with humility and remain watchful

1 Peter 5:1–10 joins responsible leadership, mutual humility and confidence in God’s care during suffering.

Care for people entrusted to you

Peter addresses elders as a fellow elder and directs them to shepherd willingly and by example. The contrast with greed and domination gives leadership a clear moral shape. People entrusted to a leader are to receive care, rather than become a means of securing that leader’s status.

Hold care and watchfulness together

The invitation to entrust anxiety to God stands beside a call to be alert and resist the devil. Trust does not require passivity. Peter also reminds suffering believers that others share their experience; hardship need not mean they have been abandoned or singled out.

Practise humility in a specific responsibility

Consider how you receive questions, share burdens and use authority. God’s promised restoration gives hope without a timetable for every difficulty. A faithful response today may be listening patiently, seeking support or correcting a decision that has placed an unfair burden on someone else.

For reflection

How could someone under your care experience more patience and less pressure this week?

A short prayer

Father, teach me to serve willingly, listen humbly and entrust my anxieties to You. Strengthen those who are suffering. Amen.
