READING NOTES
Let renewal reach everyday conduct
Josiah’s reforms and Ephesians 4 invite us to consider whether our commitments are reflected in the way we live.
Read Josiah’s reforms in their setting
In 2 Kings 23:4–9, Josiah removes objects and practices connected with other gods from Judah’s worship. Verses 1–3, as supporting context, describe the reading of the covenant and the king’s commitment to it. This account concerns Israel’s covenant life; it does not authorise Christians to attack people or destroy another community’s property.
Notice the replacements Paul names
Ephesians 4:17–32 moves from a renewed mind to concrete changes: truth in place of falsehood, useful work and generosity in place of stealing, and speech that helps others. Kindness and forgiveness belong to this renewal. A change of religious appearance alone leaves these responsibilities unanswered.
Begin where change can be recognised
Ask how your commitments affect the people who hear your words or depend on your honesty. Repairing a misleading statement, paying what is owed or refusing slander gives renewal a practical expression. The measure is faithfulness to Christ in conduct, rather than the force of a public declaration.
For reflection
Which habit needs both a clear ending and a better practice in its place?
A short prayer
Lord, renew my mind and shape my conduct. Help me speak truth, work honestly and treat others with the kindness I have received in Christ. Amen.
