READING NOTES
Draw near with an undivided heart
James 4:5–10 calls for humility and a sincere return to God amid the desires that divide a community.
Read the appeal alongside the quarrels
The opening of James 4 traces conflict to competing desires and misguided motives. That is supporting context for the assigned reading. Verse 5 is translated and interpreted differently; the clear movement in verses 6–10 is toward God’s grace, humility and wholehearted repentance.
Let repentance involve more than feeling
James connects approaching God with cleansing hands and purifying hearts. His call to mourn confronts complacency about wrongdoing. It is not a demand to remain permanently distressed or to regard every expression of joy as sinful. Humility receives grace and takes wrongdoing seriously.
Take an honest step toward reconciliation
A divided heart may seek God’s help while protecting the resentment that fuels a quarrel. Consider what needs to be acknowledged before defending your position. Returning to God can include a truthful apology, a changed habit and willingness to listen without bargaining for immediate praise.
For reflection
What desire is keeping an avoidable quarrel alive, and what honest response can you make?
A short prayer
God of grace, reveal the motives I prefer to hide. Help me turn toward You with humility and seek peace truthfully. Amen.
