Speak honestly when help is needed
In 2 Kings 4:38–41, a meal prepared during famine becomes dangerous, and the community brings its need to Elisha.
See the need within the famine
Elisha asks for a meal for the prophetic community at Gilgal. One person gathers unfamiliar wild gourds and adds them to the pot. The account describes an attempt to provide food that results in danger. A good intention does not guarantee a safe outcome.
Observe the response to danger
The men recognise the problem, cry out and stop eating. Elisha adds flour, and the narrative reports that the food is no longer harmful. This is a particular account of deliverance, not a recipe for making poisonous food safe or a reason to delay medical help.
Let care include admitting a mistake
When something meant to help has caused harm, concealment can deepen the danger. A faithful practical response is to name the problem promptly and seek appropriate help. Gratitude for God’s care can accompany careful judgement, honest reporting and concern for those affected.
For reflection
Is there a problem you need to disclose so that others can receive help promptly?
A short prayer
Lord, give me honesty when things go wrong and wisdom to seek help. Teach me to care for others beyond the wish to appear capable. Amen.
