READING NOTES
Hear the warning without judging the sufferer
Deuteronomy 28:15–22 confronts covenant unfaithfulness and calls for a careful distinction between hearing a warning and explaining another person’s suffering.
Keep the covenant setting in view
Moses addresses Israel before entry into the promised land. The blessings in verses 1–14 are supporting context for the reversal that begins at verse 15. Food, family, work and health appear in this warning about forsaking God. Its setting is Israel’s covenant life, rather than a diagnosis of every hardship a reader may encounter.
Do not turn the warning into an accusation
The passage does not give us knowledge of why a particular person is ill or a harvest fails. John 9:1–3, offered as supporting context rather than an assigned reading, records Jesus rejecting the disciples’ assumption that a man’s blindness must be traced to his or his parents’ sin. Care for someone in distress should begin with compassion.
Examine your own response
Take the call to obedience seriously by naming a responsibility you have neglected. Put right what you can, seek help where needed and support those facing hardship. Humility allows a warning to challenge our conduct without making us judges of another person’s standing before God.
For reflection
What needs correcting in your own conduct, and who needs practical care rather than an explanation of their pain?
A short prayer
Lord, help me hear Your word with humility. Give me courage to correct my conduct and compassion to stand beside those who suffer. Amen.
