Let grace reshape what you serve
Romans 6:19–23 contrasts the direction and outcome of two ways of living, calling us to offer ordinary choices to God while receiving eternal life as His gift.
Keep grace and obedience together
Earlier in Romans 6, Paul rejects the idea that grace makes continuing in sin unimportant. Verses 1–14 are supporting context: union with Christ's death and resurrection gives the chapter's call to a new life. Obedience is therefore a response to grace, not a way of purchasing it.
Notice the direction of each service
Paul says he is speaking in human terms and uses the familiar image of slavery to make the contrast plain. Giving ourselves repeatedly to impurity leads further into lawlessness. Giving ourselves to righteousness leads towards holiness. The image asks who directs our conduct; it should not be used to excuse the cruelty of human slavery.
Receive the gift and change the next choice
The final verse distinguishes wages from gift: sin earns death, while eternal life in Christ is God's gift. That hope does not make daily conduct irrelevant. Choose one habit, conversation or private decision in which you have been yielding to what harms. Bring it honestly to God, seek appropriate help and take a concrete step towards what is right.
For reflection
What repeated choice is shaping you, and what would it mean to offer that part of your life to God today?
A short prayer
God of grace, thank You for the gift of life in Christ. Show me where harmful habits are directing me, and help me offer my choices to what is right and holy. Amen.
